The story begins with Kyle Pereira, whose fascination with internal combustion engines ignited at a young age. Perched atop his father's Jawa 250, he felt the thrill of the ride, and from there, a lifelong passion was born. Fast forward to 2012, and Kyle, now joined by Suraj Thapa, a master of British iron, founded Garage Built Motorcycles. Their mission? To breathe new life into vintage machines, and the Triumph 3HW was their canvas.
The 3HW, a 343cc overhead-valve single produced during World War II, was a workhorse for the Allies. Its heavy iron components, a result of aluminum conservation, gave it a sturdy yet reliable character. However, the donor bike Kyle acquired was a post-war survivor, ravaged by fire, presenting a unique challenge.
A Custom Drag Bike with a Twist
The concept of 'Fast Forward' emerged organically, a vintage custom drag bike with a time-traveling twist. The warped cast-iron cylinder block, beyond repair, prompted the duo to cast a new aluminum block, resulting in a 2.5 kg weight reduction and improved heat dissipation. Inside, a New Old Stock T80 slipper racing piston from the 1930s bumped compression, breathing new life into the old warhorse.
Visual Transformation
Visually, the 3HW's wartime bulk was replaced by sharp, aggressive lines. Kyle, a novice in sheet metal fabrication, crafted a split-tank setup, utilizing the left side for fuel and the right for oil. This move created a negative space at the rear, a hallmark of the drag-bike aesthetic.
Upcycling and Innovation
The front end was transformed with a sleek bikini fairing and flyscreen, crafted from an old helmet. This brilliant upcycling not only houses the modified triple clamps but also adds to the bike's unique character. The original girder forks were swapped for modern telescopic forks from a Yamaha FZ16, providing stability and disc-brake stopping power.
